This guide is a step to step guide on how to root, unlock, recovery and flash a custom ROM for HTC One M7 on Windows 8.1.A bit of background.Recently I had complaints from a HTC One M7 owner who face a lot of lag after upgrading to the latest version of Android Lollipop, so she wanted to downgrade it. That is why I experimented on her phone and it worked 100% fine after downgrading to a Google Play Edition KitKat ROM.Of course, this guide is supposed to work on every custom ROM that you wanted to flash including upgrading or downgrading, provided that you know the reliability of the custom ROM.
HTC One Toolkit is an extremely user-friendly utility for the users of Windows. It can install the appropriate USB drivers on your computer and do a lot more stuff as well. It helps you with unlocking the phone’s bootloader, using HTC Dev or Revone method. Jun 15, 2013 -open cmd window. Change to directory containing adb/fastboot utilities-adb with the phone in the booted OS,usb debug enabled, enter: adb devices in a cmd window-fastboot with phone in fastboot, enter: fastboot devices in cmd window in either case,a properly connected phone with working drivers installed should report back the phones serial number.
Credits to for most of the steps and also resources. I’m merely just rewriting the guide in a way which is a little more understandable.PreparationBefore you proceed, please make sure that your HTC One M7 has at least 70% battery. It is also essential to have an external SD Card.Proceed with own risk. I am not responsible if this guide causes any catastrophic event because the alarm clock failed to wake you up or your HTC One M7 did not survive the ultimate flash test and it bricked. You have been WARNED!.Part 1: Unlock. Go to and create an account on HTCDev. If you already have one, sign in to your account.
Download these adb/fastboot files here. (Credit to torxx – XDA Recognized Contributor). Make a new folder named fastboot on C:/ drive. Extract the zip downloaded from step 2 to the new folder you created on step 3.
Go to and select “HTC One”, then click “Begin Unlock Bootloader”. Click Yes on the pop up, tick both boxes on legal terms, then click “Proceed to Unlock Instructions”. Click “Proceed to Step 5” and proceed to next page.
Ignore their instructions. Power off your HTC One M7 by holding the power button down for 10 seconds. Power your phone on by holding power and volume down together. (I recommend to press volume down first before pressing power.). Highlight Fastboot with Volume + or -, then press power. Plug your HTC One M7 to your Windows PC.
You might need to wait for a while before the phone’s driver is fully installed on your PC. Open Command Prompt by going to “Start” and type “cmd”, then press Enter. On Command Prompt, change directory to the folder you created earlier by typing: cd C:fastboot. Then, type this into the command prompt: fastboot oem getidentifiertoken. At this point you will get your identifier token. Select and copy the text starting with the line: and end with the line:. Paste the identifier token into the box at the bottom of HTCDev website then click “Submit”.
Very shortly, you will receive an email from HTCDev with an attachment file named “Unlockcode.bin”. Download the “Unlockcode.bin” from the email and save it to the same folder you created on Step 2.
Type this into the command prompt: fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlockcode.bin. Now look at your phone.
The display will change, press Vol + to accept and press power to confirm.Part 2: Recovery. Download recovery of your choice – CWM or TWRP. My personal preference is CWM. For CWM there is classic and touch version. Both works the same.
You will navigate classic version of CWM with Power, Vol + and – and the touch version with touch feature. For TWRP, just download the latest version from the download link. Place the recovery file downloaded to your C:fastboot you have created earlier. It should be at the same location with fastboot.exe.
Open Command Prompt and change directory to the folder you created earlier again by typing: cd C:fastboot. Type this into the command prompt:fastboot flash recovery nameoftherecovery.imgReplace recovery nameoftherecovery with the name of the recovery file you have downloaded.
For example:fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.4.6-m7ul.imgPart 3: RootRemark: This section is only required if you are flashing a stock rooted ROM. If you are flashing a custom ROM, skip this section. Root your phone with SuperSU by Chainfire or SuperUser by koush. Both will do the job well. Download file from the link. Place the.zip file you have downloaded into a SD Card.
Then plug the SD Card into your HTC One M7. Power off your HTC One M7, then hold the volume down + power to boot into bootloader. Highlight Recovery with Volume + or -, then press power. Select “Install zip from sd card”, then select “Choose zip from sd card”.
Select the downloaded zip file you have placed into the SD Card earlier on Step 2. After install, reboot your HTC One M7.Part 4: ROMRemark: With htcdev unlocked, you need to flash boot.img after every ROM installation. Most custom ROMs have the script to flash boot.img file automatically with the ROM. However, if you do not see boot.img in the custom ROM or you face boot loop problem, perform these steps. Download the ROM you want to flash. Open the ROM zip with an achieve manager such as WinRAR and extract the boot.img out of it.
By installing a firmware on your HTC Android device, or any other device for that matter, you can easily reset your device back to stock, and with that, fixing any issues with the device. This also helps you to unroot (removes root access) and uninstall any custom recovery like TWRP, CWM, Cyanogen, etc. Whatever be the issue, installing the firmware — whether using RUU or ZIP — fixes the device, and thus firmware is pretty much a must-have tool and download for you. To find a firmware for your device, do search our site as we have covered firmwares for most of the HTC Android devices. Step 2: Download. Extract this zip file into a new folder.
Let’s call it adb folder for the purpose of this guide. You must have htcfastboot file in this folder.Step 3: (or Download mode, for newer HTC devices).Step 4: Connect your device to the PC using a USB cable. Make sure you have installed. In case your PC fails to recognize or detect your HTC device, then you need to install or re-install. Connect using USB cable again thereafter.
Doing a PC restart is a good thing too after installing drivers.Step 5: Once the device is properly recognized on the PC, open a command window inside the folder where your RUU.zip is saved. For this, simply double click on the command prompt file in your adb folder.
